Increasingly, intellectual property (IP) is
gaining importance to enterprises. Companies dedicate
substantial time and resources to gain IP protection through
trade marks, registered designs, copyrights or patents. The
challenge for most enterprises is optimizing their IP's value,
which requires effective IP management. Effective IP
management increases the usefulness of IP in sustaining
competitive advantage and generating revenue.
Chris created a "treasure map" of strategic
IP initiatives while leading the Emerging Businesses at
Qualcomm. Chris developed an effective methodology of
taking engineering and R&D developments as well as 3rd party IP
and building business cases for each of these opportunities.
Once the business case was done, a scoring system was used by
the engineering and legal teams to better understand the
technical and legal position the IP held.
Once Qualcomm's strategic position was
defined, a competitive matrix of threats could be mapped.
Chris's team was then able to easily see what holes there were
and build this into the business cases and maximize the value of
the organization and return on investment (ROI).
